Dublin's Glasnevin Cemetery

We really enjoyed our recent visit to Glasnevin Cemetery and Museum in Dublin. Glasnevin cemetery is, in effect, Ireland’s national cemetery. Many Irish Statesmen and women have been interred here, and our tour of the cemetery, led by resident historian, Bridget Sheerin, was a virtual visit through Ireland’s past. The visit to the graves of Irish patriots such as Parnell, De Valera, Collins, O’Donovan Rossa etc. and an account of their deeds, was awe-inspiring in this centenary year of the 1916 Rising and Ireland’s fight for freedom from colonial power. Of particular note was the re-enactment, by a Dublin actor, of Padraig Pearse’s oration at the burial of O’Donovan Rossa in 1915.

The excellent museum attached to the cemetery is well worth a visit. Here you can read and experience the history of the cemetery, which is home to 1.4 million deceased Dubliners, (more than the living population of Dublin at the present time.) To experience the detailed history of Dublin City and of Ireland, we recommend this fascinating visit as one of the top sight seeing spots in Dublin.
