Known as the Marble City, Kilkenny is a favourite amongst tourists and locals alike. The medieval architecture, boutique shops and traditional Irish pubs make it a ‘must-experience’ on your vacation in Ireland.
And with so much to do in the Marble City, it can be difficult to know where to begin! But, worry not, as we’re here to help with a local’s guide to Kilkenny.
Visit Kilkenny Castle and Park
Founded just after the Norman conquest of Ireland, few buildings on our lovely island boast a longer history of continuous occupation than Kilkenny castle.
From the abundance of history, the rolling parkland and the stunning rose gardens; this particular site is a must-see when visiting the city of Kilkenny.
Feel free to bring a picnic along with you to truly take in the wildlife surroundings.
Discover the Smithwick’s Experience
Located in the heart of Kilkenny city – just a 5-minute walk from Kilkenny castle, is the Smithwick’s Experience. The Smithwick’s experience is an interactive journey, visitors are taken through over 300 years of history of Ireland’s most popular ale: Smithwicks.
By the end of the tour you’ll know all about how the ale is made and you’ll even be given a complimentary pint of Smithwicks – not too shabby!
Check out a trad music session
Kilkenny is one of the best places in Ireland to experience traditional Irish music. Live music sessions usually take place at least once or twice a week.
Grab a tea in Mocha’s Vintage Tea Rooms
Fresh baked goods and a relaxing ambience make Mocha’s Vintage Tea Rooms the ideal place to relax with a cup of tea before a day of exploring.
All food is freshly prepared daily with a choice of everything from an Irish fry-up to scrumptious cakes.
See a show at the Watergate Theatre
Watergate Theatre has made it onto our local’s guide to Kilkenny for a simple reason – it’s been keeping tourists and locals entertained since 1993. The theatre is constantly busy hosting exciting events such as drama, comedy and musical performances.
Be sure to check the Watergate Theatre event calendar if you’re visiting Kilkenny and, if you manage to catch a show, drop into John Cleere’s pub for a pint afterwards!
